Sparks Will Fly, Hockley Woods, Essex
I was awarded funding to work within an Essex community, to build and fire a ceramic kiln, in an ancient woodland. Over the course of two weeks, I was resident in the woods, which allowed the community to witness the gradual construction of the kiln. I initially built a structure of branches which was then clad with clay, generously donated by the local brick works.
Throughout the project, I delivered workshops with local schools and community groups. Young people had the opportunity to create clay dragons, which were later packed into the kiln and smoke-fired.
The culmination of our efforts occurred during Wild Woods Day, an annual celebration of the woodland. The sculptural kiln was fired, drawing a crowd of eager onlookers who marvelled at the spectacle. Attendees also had the chance to sample tasty snacks prepared using the kiln, further enhancing the community's connection to our collaborative endeavour.
