Craftivism

Craftivism: Craft + Activism

I’ve delivered craftivism workshops for numerous community groups and at public, exploring issues important to the participants. The workshops typically begin with group discussions to explore the chosen subject matter, whether predetermined in collaboration with the workshop organiser or chosen by the participants during the project.

Using waste fabric which I source from scrap stores, participants create mini textile banners. Lettering is created using alphabet dies and my die cutter machine. The text is attached using a heat press and heat-activated adhesive, making the process accessible even to those with no sewing experience. I do however, provide sewing materials for those who wish to embellish their designs with stitch. Taking the time to slow down and sew can encourage contemplation of the subject matter.

Participants have the option to create banners for themselves, a loved one, or their community. The slogans created range from encouraging and thought-provoking to occasionally hilarious.

A frequent subject matter has been for participants to create a “pledge to the planet”. These banners serve as gentle reminders for behavioural change, when displayed in homes or as unexpected encounters in public spaces.

I have been successful at securing Creative Scotland Youth Arts Funding for many of these projects.
